ELZi Polar Bear Cold Plunge in Montreal Saint Lawrence River
Share
I practice cold plunging during the winter as a method to train my body to warm up more efficiently—a valuable skill for living in Québec, where winters last approximately four months. This practice also enhances my endurance during long runs in cold conditions.
If you’re attempting a cold plunge, preparation is essential. Ensure you have warm clothing ready for when you exit the water, as the true challenge begins once you're out. The air is often colder than the water, and any wind can quickly strip away the heat your body generates. Additionally, hand dexterity significantly decreases in freezing temperatures, especially if your hands have been submerged. Opt for clothing that is easy to put on and provides effective coverage, such as a large hoodie, warm wool layers, and a heavy winter coat to shield against the wind.
To make the experience more manageable, consider wearing a neck warmer, a hat, water shoes, and gloves. Avoid wetting your hair to minimize heat loss. This combination has worked well for me. While I aspire to eventually plunge without a hat or neck warmer, I’m taking it one step at a time.
Before attempting a cold plunge in a natural environment, I recommend building your tolerance by starting with cold showers or baths at home or in a spa setting during the winter months.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the value of body fat in cold conditions—it provides insulation and serves as an energy reserve, which is a natural adaptation to help us withstand the cold.
